What Are Hemorrhoids?
Hemorrhoids are swollen veins located around the rectum and anus, which can cause varying levels of discomfort. They may develop internally within the rectum or externally around the anus, with symptoms that range from mild irritation to more intense pain. Many people experience hemorrhoids at some stage of their lives, particularly during times of increased abdominal pressure. Hemorrhoids are generally categorized into two main types:
- Internal Hemorrhoids: These are located inside the rectum and can lead to bleeding without significant pain unless they prolapse or protrude outside the anus.
- External Hemorrhoids: Found under the skin around the anus, these can cause pain, especially when blood clots form, leading to what’s known as thrombosed hemorrhoids.
Understanding the type and severity of hemorrhoids can help guide treatment, as different approaches may be needed to achieve the best results.
